DIY Macrame Keychain

DIY Macrame Keychain

Macrame has been quickly coming back into style over the last few years and it’s not hard to see why. It’s essentially a group on knotting techniques that you can turn into a beautiful work of art.

After learning a few of the basic knots I was really inspired to make something small for my sisters and friends over the holidays. So, when seeing all these ideas for macrame keychains on Pinterest and Etsy, I decided to try it out myself. And I’m in love with how they turned out!

Here’s how to make a beautiful keychain using four basic macrame knots.

Supplies:

  • Key rings (I got mine from Michael’s)

  • Macrame cord, twine or yarn (In my case I used twine and yarn)

  • Scissors

  • And Tape

First, cut your cord into six long strands.

I wanted my keychain to be about 3 inches long so I multiplied that by 4 and made each strand about 12 inches in length.

It is important to get the length of your stands right as you’ll want to account for the fact that they will be folded in half and knotted several times.

Next, attach all six strands to the key ring with a larks head knot (as seen below).

Once all six strands are attached you should have twelve in total hanging from the key ring.

Then divid the stands in half.

Next, you’ll create an X using what’s called a double half hitch.

Start by placing the far right strand across and down the next five strands.

Then take the next strand and loop it over, under and through.

Pull tight and repeat creating a double half hitch.

Moving on to the next strand, continue down until you get to the center.

Then repeat on the left side only this time continuing down until you get to the end.

Next, continue the double half hitch down starting where you left off on the right hand side to complete the X.

To continue create a row of four square knots down the center.

Start by separating out the four center strands.

To create the first square knot cross the far left strand over the other three center strands.

Then place the far right of the four center strands over, under and through.

Pull tight and repeat; only this time crossing the far right strand over and the far left over, under and through.

Then, placing the far left and the far right strands from your first square knot to the side, continue down with another square knot using the next far left and far right strands.

Continue down creating two more square knots.

Then create a diamond around your set of square knots by continuing down with the double half hitch on both sides.

To finish create a second row of the double half hitch, this time gathering the strings as you go.

Then repeat on the other side.

Using another string make a gathering knot to create a tassel at the end.

First lay the string over the gathered strands, leaving a tail at the top.

Then create a loop and wrap the string around several times.

Finally, put the string through the loop and pull tight with both ends.

Then cut the end of the string.

Finally, cut the strands to the desired length.

And you’re done!
